Deterministic and stochastic assessment of the harmonic currents consumed by discharge lamps

The paper examines the deterministic and stochastic behavior of magnetic ballast discharge lamps. Expressions to deterministically calculate the harmonic currents of discharge lamps are provided and analytical expressions of the probability density functions of these harmonic currents are obtained. The results are validated with experimental measurements.     

Study of propagation phenomena in three-phase form wound machines operating at medium and high frequency

A three-phase model of asynchronous machines operating at medium or high frequencies is presented. It can be used to study the propagation of surge waves along the stator windings of induction form wound machines.The model is derived from an analogy with a three-phase transmission line. The use of time-space Clarke vectors allows the introduction of mutual coupling between phases. The analytical expressions for voltage waves are derived by means of the Laplace approach to the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations.Some applicative examples confirm the model validity and can underline some aspects of the project of three-phase windings.     

Selection of strategies in judgment-based effort estimation

We currently know little about the factors that motivate the selection and change of strategy in judgment-based effort estimation. A better understanding of these issues may lead to more accurate judgment-based effort estimates and motivates the four experiments reported in this paper. The experiments’ two main results are the identification of the importance of “estimation surprises” (large estimation errors) to motivate estimation strategy change and the large individual variation in the initial choice of estimation strategy. The individual variation seems not only to be a result of differences in previous experiences, but also a result of differences in the mental “accessibility” of the strategies. We found, for example, that the use of a type of strategy was increased when we instructed a developer to use the same type of strategy on unrelated tasks immediately before.     

Towards new web services based supervisory systems in complex industrial organizations: Basic principles and case study

Mobility, cooperation and the information access of the different human actors within a complex industrial organization are some of the concerns of web-based HMI design. In this paper we highlight the application of some key concepts of web services for the specification and design of a complex supervisory web-based HMI. Hence, a novel approach based on a service oriented architecture and web services allowing flexible and transparent interaction between the field devices and human operators currently being considered is now possible. An overall design framework is presented and discussed. A real representative case study illustrating this approach is described and discussed from the human-machine interaction point of view, as well as further work.
